The World’s Highest Tides: Exploring the Bay of Fundy

We continue our adventure in Canada, and before leaving Nova Scotia, we want to witness a truly unique phenomenon — the highest tides in the world: welcome to the Bay of Fundy. This place, famous for its towering tides, leaves us speechless and is a must-visit for anyone exploring Eastern Canada.

We leave Freddie, our van, in the convenient parking lot at the Burntcoat Head visitor center. It’s said that the name comes from a word of the Mi’kmaq people meaning “brown coast head,” later adapted into English as “Burntcoat Head.” There are also various local legends about the area, which we found very intriguing.

We captured some stunning footage from above with our drone — once again, the colors mesmerized us — and also filmed with a simple time-lapse the incredible and rapid arrival of the water. We highly recommend not missing these shots!

We also had a lot of fun witnessing the highest tides in the world at the Bay of Fundy. When the water recedes, the seabed becomes very slippery. Marianna ended up flying to the ground not once, but twice — which meant two pairs of pants full of red sand and mud. A real drama for those of us living the van life!

We’re so impressed by this place and the chance to walk on the ocean floor that we decide to spend the night in the parking lot. We want to enjoy both the incoming and outgoing tides.

Just like the water, the next day arrives quickly. We wake up in a thick fog and are lucky enough to see Burntcoat Head from yet another breathtaking perspective.

After lunch, we get back on the road, but just a few kilometers later we stop for a much-needed laundry! We take the opportunity to sample some local treats at the oldest general store in Canada — can you believe it first opened on 1839? Once the chores are done and after passing the time with board games at the Fit’z Roy General Store, it’s time to continue our journey. The colors of autumn are waiting for us!
