We leave Peggy’s Cove and continue our road trip along the scenic Route 333. This van life in Canada is giving us one-of-a-kind views, and we’re very curious to make a stop at Oak Island along the way.
We start the morning with a stop at the Swissair Memorial Site, where, on September 2, 1998, Swissair Flight 111, carrying 229 people, crashed into the sea just a few kilometers from the coast. The monument perfectly aligns with the angle between the crash site and the point from which the rescue efforts were launched. Visiting such memorials is always deeply moving. With a heavier heart and a growing awareness of how precious time is, we continue with our day.
We arrive at our main stop: Oak Island with high expectations for this part of our van life in Canada. We read about an Interpretative Center that’s open to visitors, but to our great disappointment, we discover that the road is closed, and access to the island is not possible! We launch the drone and can clearly see the excavation area until we are abruptly interrupted by a woman. We’ll leave you with a full video because the footage is truly worth it, and what she tells us is shocking.
We end the day with a visit to Mahone Bay, a vibrant town where we spent a few hours. Even in mid-September, it was already decorated for Halloween. In the evening, we’ll head to Lunenburg, where we’ll stay for a few days, sleeping in the parking lot of a very unique bookstore —which we’ll later discover is haunted. We really like the city, which has German roots and reminds us a bit of Northern Europe. Fishing is also a big part of life here, so we couldn't resist trying a delicious fish burger.
